APPLYING TO TAKE THE ABMH EXMANINATION:
INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES
Candidates for the American Board of Medical Hypnosis should meet the following criteria prior to submitting an application for taking the ABMH examination:
- Be a licensed physician in good standing and hold active board certification in his or her medical specialty
- Be able to document at least two years of clinical hypnosis experience in practice.
- Have completed at least 100 hours of Category 1 clinical hypnosis training accredited by ASCH, SCEH or their equivalent.
Note that candidates who are Approved Consultants through ASCH meet these criteria.
A complete application for the ABMH examination includes:
- A completed ABMH Diplomate Record (application form)
- A Curriculum Vitae
- Documentation of education and training in hypnosis, including but not limited to:
- Dates, hours, locations,
- Educators, sponsors and certifying (e.g., ASCH, SCEH, ISH)
- Learning with Approved Consultants, mentoring relationships
- Hypnosis teaching to other professionals, including but not limited to
- Lectures with dates, location, type of audience
- Workshops with dates, location, sponsors and certifying organization
- Descriptions of supervision and consultant work with other professionals
- Hypnosis Publications, including but not limited to:
- Abstracts, articles, book chapters in professional medical publications
- Audiotapes, videotapes or CD’s
- Contributions to articles or broadcasts in the lay media
- A videotape or DVD recording of a clinical encounter using hypnosis that meets the following criteria:
- Representative of your usual application of hypnosis for a clinical problem in your practice.
- Two sessions with a patient, one reflecting initial introduction to hypnosis and a second, later employing more advanced techniques or strategies.
- A 1-2 page synopsis highlighting the clinical history, the rationale for the hypnotic approach that is employed and any relevant controversies in the use of hypnosis for this type of problem.
- A written release given by the patient and guardian (if a minor)
- A letter of recommendation from a professional colleague in the applicant’s medical community or an officer of the local medical society who is familiar with the applicant’s practice.
- Two recent photographs (12.5 X 18.5 cm or larger)
- A check or money order in the amount of $450 (US funds only) made out to the American Board of Medical Hypnosis.
The completed application must be submitted to the Secretary/Treasurer of the ABMH no later than 1-month prior the first day of the examination. This will be one month before the first day of the Annual Meeting and Workshops of ASCH. The ABMH examination is offered one time per year at the Annual Meeting and Workshops of ASCH.
The application will be considered completed and the applicant accepted to sit for the Examination only after it is reviewed by the Secretary/Treasurer and found to be satisfactory. The Secretary/Treasurer may request additional review of the application by other officers of the ABMH.
The dates, times, and locations of the Examination will not be scheduled until a completed application has been received, reviewed and found complete. Incomplete applications or applications received after the deadline will be returned to the applicant.
